Audio Description
- Blind Imagination

In 1993 Arsenal Football Club began a voluntary audible service for Blind fans to experience live football matches once again. It gave visually impared fans the opportunity to be at a match and listen to a live commentary through a headset.I managed to get permission and test out one of the set pieces for myself.

Sitting in the atmosphere I listened to match and imagined what it would be like to be blind. Using Alex's detailed running commentary I closed my eyes and put myself in a blind persons position. The following illustrations are visual representations of where I thought the ball was situated on the pitch. It illustrates a blind persons imagination of the game and I carried this out for both the first half and second half.

Q - How do you interact with the fans and what are the key areas you must cover knowing that you are talking to the visually impared?

If you are asking about what we say rather than how we say it the following should help. I try to paint a picture in the mind's eye of the fans of anything interesting that is going on. i.e. if there is a break in play I'll look around and see if anything interesting is happening. If there is no break in play and the action is fast and furious it is practically impossible to describe everything that is going on.

I also try to be very descriptive about exactly where on the pitch things are taking place. Theirry Henry receives the ball 10 yards into the opponents' half and 5 yards in from the touch line is more informative than just saying his name when he gets the ball. Similarly, the exact location of a free kick outside the box for the opposition can help them appreciate how much 'danger' there is.

Hope that answers your question.

Alex
